became a four-year college
in 1975 and gave out its first
bachelor's degrees in the
spring of 1976.

York magazines. A
distinguished professorship
and a good location for his
family made USC an offer he
couldn't refuse.
"Besides, it's a hell of a lot
more fun writing from the
South," Emerson said.
He views South Carolina
as an intriguing state with a
tremendous amount of story
matter. "The state is absolutely
unique," Emerson
said.
BUT HE IS finding it increasingly
difficult to take
advantage of these
resources due to his busy
work schedule. Aside from
teaching two writing courses
and one literature course,

PARADE), a speaker for the
Reader's Digest workshops
and a member of the board
of directors of Playboy
Enterprises Inc.
He tries to teach reality

Emerson came to USC
after 30 years in the
magazine business. The
Marvara graduate was nired
by "Collier's" magazine in
1946 on his graduation day.
Shortly after he took the job, he
organized an Atlanta
bureau for "Collier's" and
served as bureau chief and
staff writer until 1953.

Evening Post" hired him as
articles editor. He later
worked as managing editor
and executive editor, and he

magazine folded in 1969.
Emerson was also a
syndicated columnist for
Gannett Newspapers, and he
worked in network radio.

The campus is suffering
from a lack of library space

space, according to Doyle W.
Boggs, public information

building was vetoed by Gov.
Riley. Boggs said the
campus is becoming very
crowded. "This is typical of
growing campuses. We're
just having growing pains."
The campus employs 135
full-time instructors with
graduate degrees from 151
schools. Seventy-five percent
have doctorate degrees
or master's degrees in

agency for high school
dropouts in the area.
