Editorial Homecoming I: j uvcs ucspne boycott plans This week is mid-term, and it seems that just about every instructor has decided to give his exam right now. Many students are spending a lot of time in the library (some of them for the first time this semester). The atmosphere nrminH ppmnnc: hue tfntfon *j litHo tonco ? bvvvv" " "ll,v lv-"ov-In the midst of it all is Homecoming. Yes, in case you haven't heard, this is Homecoming Week. Even though the Gamecocks have played at home two weeks in a row, it's still Homecoming. To get in the spirit you have to use your imagination a bit and pretend that the football team beat Michigan just last week and is returning home to face a tough Cincinnati squad. It's a shame that so .many students will be tied up studying for exams and will miss out on participating in some of the events that will be going on this week as part of the Uninppnmino foctivitioc Hno (hinrt ic frw ciirn ? (hn Kv/L.wviiuii^ *\.uu ? iv? v.?. vyuv Lump, to i vi om v. iiiv vji i ^vrvo will enjoy the activities. They always seem to find time, or they make the time to participate. It must be their "organization." But it almost wasn't that way in 1980. Bui they thought better of the idea and decided to compromise. The problem started when the Greek nominee for Homecoming Queen, Angel Theodore, was not selected as one of the five finalists by an independent panel set up by the Homecoming Commission to pick the finalists. Threats of boycotting the parade, the event the Greek* traditionally dominate, and other dire measures were con sidered at the meeting, which the IFC now claims never was held. In the end, IFC decided to throw their support to Nav> ROTC's candidate Laura Baker in order to save face. So the parade boycott is off. And the Greeks have left Angel Theodore in the dust. They had to find someone to vote for a* a bloc because, of course, the Greeks could never be split ? especially on something as crucial as voting for Homecoming queen. When one IFC member was asked who IFC was sup Dorting. he said Laura Baker. When asked about Aner Theodore, he acted as though he had never heard of her When told that Navy ROTC was sponsoring Baker, he said "No way ? she is our candidate." It must be very importanl to the Greeks to be associated in some way with the winner ol the Homecoming Queen sweepstakes. It's too bad they hav< to feel that way, but at least they didn't pull their suppori from the parade, which would have been a childish move.
