Carolina football Coach
Jim Carlen warned his team
all week long that Saturday
night's game against the
Duke Blue Devils would not
be an automatic victory.
By the end of the contest,
Carlen the coach proved also
to be Carlen the prophet.
While his squad held on for a
20-7 victory, the game was
up for grabs until late in the
final quarter.
Carlen's concern with
Duke may have stemmed
from two unbelievable
comebacks that the Blue
Devils had made against his
teams in the past. In 1977,

"Duke played well arid
they'll get better as the
season progresses," Carlen
said. "We weren't

As for his own squad's
performance, Carlen was
quite complimentary considering
the Gamecocks
committed three turnovers

"We didn't play very
sharp tonight. Everything
went wrong, but we won and
that's the sign of a good
football team," he said.
Although the Carolina
offense racked up 476 yards,
the Gamecocks got only two
touchdowns.
"We moved the football,
but turned it over three

Carlen said. "Our big

5-1, but Carlen still sees

"I still think we can play
better. We hope to get in the
top ten, but we need to
continue to play better," he
said. "We need to work on
our passing game. Harper
has to read (defenses)
better. We are getting good
protection and we have good

With only five games
remaining in the 1980 season
many Carolina fans have
already started talking
about going to a postseason
bowl game. When questioned
about his bowl preference,
Carlen casually replied,
"The Cincinnatti Bowl this
coming Saturday night."
