Former stars .. i c return jorgame By Richard Meyers Assistant Sports Editor Past and present Gamecock baseball players will gather together on Oct. 11 to play in what is hoped to be the first annual alumni game marking the end of fail practice. Carolina players from the 1974-1980 teams will compete aeainst thp iQfti iisr cnnoH ?4,1 L w WUV UVJUUU. 1 IIV aiuiiiiu gi Ulip Will OC represented by several major league ballplayers, including Mookie Wilson, Gary Hancock, Ed Lynch and Randy Martz. Wilson, Hancock and Martz were all members of the 1977 USC team that finished second in the College World Series. All three were called up to their major league teams on September 1 and have seen considerable action since then. Hancock was called up from the minor leagues mid-way through the season to play for the Boston Red Sox. Wilson is an outfielder for the New York Mets, and Lynch is a pitcher for the MetS. Martz is a pitcher for the Chicago Clubs. RELIEF PITCHER Jeff Twitty of the Kansas City Royals will be involved in playoff action and will be unable io attend. Others from Gamecock players of the past six years who have indicated they plan Co attend include two-time AilAmerican players Earl Bass and Hank Small. Bass, who made the All-America teams in 1974 and '75 played five years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Small was a second team All-American first baseman in 1974 and first team All-American in 1975 and spent five seasons with the Atlanta Braves chain. John Marquardt, an All-American third baseman in 1978, pitcher Mike Cromer, infielder Jeff Grantz, catcher Drew nU 4 ~ C- a l 1 - ^iiuaie, ursi Daseman jonnny Hinkel and a number of others will also play. The game is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. at Sarge Fry Field. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students.
