Alcohol abi USC's Carr f: Li? ?i_.J, jiynis diuu t By Lisa Taylor StuH Writer The Campus Alcohol Project is fighting alcohol abuse on campus with a series of presentations to classes, organizations and clubs. There are three main presentations. One is an introductory presentation that tries to disprove myths and offer alternatives to alcohol abuse. This presentation is being used extensively witn university 101 classes. Responsible party planning is the theme of the second presentation. The quantity of alcohol, food and activities that should be planned for parties of various sizes are discussed. The third presentation teaches students how to deal with those who have drinking problems. The main points are immediate intervention and follow-up help. THE ATMOSPHERE on campus is one of the main causes of student drinking problems, said Mimi Parrott, Dean of Special Services and head of the alcohol project. For example, she said, if a student has a hangover, he has the option of skipping class, but if he were working he would not have that opportunity. Constant peer pressure to conform also contributes to drinking problems, she said. Rathe its purpose is education and prevention, Parrot said. THE DANGER of alcohol is that it affects the nervoi system and can cause sedation, intoxication and even death Parrot said problems start when alcohol interferes wi1 relationships, jobs or schoolwork. ii you answer yes 10 any 01 mese questions, you may nave drinking problem: Do you need a drink to cope with everyday life? Do you frequently drink until intoxicated? Do you go to work intoxicated? Do you drive while intoxicated? Have you been injured while intoxicated? Have you come into contact with police as a result intoxication? Do you do things while intoxicated that you would nev do while sober? Eighty percent of USC students drink. Twenty-year studi show that drinking patterns developed in college continue later life. The alcohol project also offers alcohol educate workshops, discussion groups and support groups f students with alcoholic parents.
