Through ten rounds, Holmes had been the aggressor. Ali appeared unable or at least unwilling to fight. Muhammed's fans were hoping that maybe in the eleventh round, he would regain the magic which had enabled him to win the heavyweight boxing title an unprecedented three times. It was not to be. Between the tenth and eleventh rounds, Ali's cornerman Angelo Dundee stopped the fight. The few punches he attempted were slow and off target. This was not the same Muhammed Ali that had reigned the boxing world for nearly two decades. Ali was the sentimental favorite in the fight. To many he will always be the champ. Last Thursday night's affair, however, was not a championship caliber fight. It was a mismatch In the ninth and tenth rounds, Holmes battered a tired Ali. Muhammed, despite the barrage of punches, never hit the canvas. But on the other hand, he never fought back. The fight was so uncharacteristic of the great Ali. There were none of Ali's lightning quick combinations. Boxing fans across the country were treated to ten rounds of "ropea-dope." Larry Holmes, however didn't turn out to be a dope. On the morning after the fight, Ali was quoted as saying he was too tired to throw a punch after the first round. The U.S. State Department sen t Ali to Africa last year on a diplomatic mission, but several African leaders snubbed him. A year ago he went to the grounds of the Washington Monument to fight "Mr. Tooth Decay" in a promotional fight. "Mr. Tooth Decay" was an ex-club fighter dressed in a white costume. Less than 500 people showed up to watch the event. This spring, Ali made a speech at Harvard University. It was publically criticized for lack of content. AT AGE 38, was Ali too old to fight? Many boxers had fought successfully at this age before. Sugar Ray Robinson fought till age 45. Joe Louis and Floyd Patterson fought till they were 37. Archie Moore and Emile Griffith both fought during their over 35 years. Fightingat age 38 is not impossible, but it is difficult. A fighter must learn to rely on his experience and knowledge in order to compensate for failing physical abilities. Ali says he'll be back. He wants to fight Mike Weaver. After last Thursday night's fight, Ali should retire for good and continue his many meaningful outside endeavors such as his fight against M.S. and the development of his project WORLD which is designed to bring $500,000 a day to feed the Door.
