That is not the j case. Although it was not . detectable at the time, the j band lost nearly all of its creative force when Duane Allman died nine years ago. J Although the band's greatest . popularity, along with its | canonization as one of the ; leaders on the rock 4n' roll , trail of tears, came during the four years following , Duane's death, the con tradiction is easily explained. The band's mystique wasnaturally enhanced by the loss of one of its namesakes and its onstage spokesman. When Eat A Peach was released in 1972, it sold more than any of I ij its predecessors, it renewed public interest in the band's three previous records. It is an album of great music that time has not diminished, and Duane plays on two-thirds of it. Brothers and Sisters released the next year, was the last good album by the Allmans and it is the only good one which Duane did not play. It was more of the jame ? no Band, just Dickey and Gregg's songs. Now comes Reach For The Sky and the components are jtill the same, only the formula is slightly changed. The first two cuts reveal just about all that exists in iie record. The first, "Hell and High Water," is a Bettszuitar-dominated sons dealing with, of course, trials and tribulations of the band. The power of the lyrics s exhibited in such lines as 'Maybe someday they'll namp n Qtroot nftw mo " Perhaps they will if you remind them too. Then it's Gregg's turn, and he presents a beach music clone called "Mystery Woman," with horns, orchestration and mindless lyrics. If AT 3 OFFICE J realize just how far away these guys are from "Whipping Post" and "Midnight Rider." The third cut, "From the Madness of the West," is the token instrumental; the song works for awhile and conjures western images in the mind. And so the album progresses. There is one really nice cut on the record, and it's not "Angeline," the song currently getting both AM and FM play. It is the last cut, "So Long," a haunting ballad written by Gregg. It may be a good-bye to both the band and its aurlionna U7ifh linao ltlrn auui^iiw. if iui tuiw imv 4 'Hope our paths cross again, not too many people ever had what we had," this would be a respectable way to fade out.
