In a business traditionally dominated by men, stars such as Deborah Harry of Blondie, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Benatar and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders have come into UIC UUICU^lll. '.V 11 Carrier 'n' roll in the latter part of the 70s that people began to realize that women can rock just as well, and in many cases better, than their already established male counterparts. Unlike some of the other women who have made it big in music recently, like Stevie Nicks, Mas does not attempt to win over an audience with cuteness and top-forty C3f >? 1 . /fl __ amative looie "t -' f skm. Mas has released two albums to date on Mercury Records: "Carolyne Mas" and "Hold On." Both have achieved critical acclaim but not the attention they deserve. Like so many truly great performers, one cannot fully flnnfopiato Moo' u|/|/> vviaiv map laiCHU) until she is witnessed live. After all, rock 'n' roll is a live form of music. On stage, Mas is confident and energetic. In the March 21, 1979 issue of the Gamecock, I wrote an article praising Mas after navmg seen her perform a short set at the National Collegiate Activities Association national convention in Washington, D.C. last February. This summer I had the pleasure of witnessing Mas and Company perform two shows at the Other End in ^.Y 1_ /V* ? ^ * new xurit uuy s ureenwicn Village. I'm convinced that Carolyne Mas is one of the most exciting live performers I've ever seen. Mas has been quoted as saying, "A live performance almost makes having a record secondary. When the audience is really responsive, then you can get into little experiments where the music goes somewhere it's never been. You push yourself and feel confident in taking chances." With an attitude like that, along with the electricity of her music both live and on vinyl, Carolyne Mas has got everything going for her. Unfortunately, every so often talents go unnoticed and garbage receives attention in the crazy world of music.
