Queen By RondA Tern pie ton Entertainment Editor What happened? Can this really be the Queen we've all listened to since junior high? Where is all the flashy instrumentation and extensive mixing the group has become famous for? Queen, strangely enough, has switched gears in mid stream and tried its hand at plain old rock 'n' roll with a combination punk 50s flavor. It would have L Queen s ploy ha group's new alb merely listenable. IT WOULD have been sensational if Queen's ploy had worked, but the group's new album, The Game, is merely listenable -- as though Queen just can't quite handle the new material. Queen just doesn't seem to enjoy playing their new music enough to really make fha liotonar unimr if Tl^i V* IV uutviivi vnJVJ IV, a r?c Game is a departure from the old Queen image, though, and should gain the group a whole new following. The album's opener, "Play the Game," Is piJNIDff PHHNRMHHHRMMHHHmHHRBSNHH Uni vCi changes reminiscent of the "old" Queen with Freddie Mercury's whining vocals and swelling background instrumentation. "Play the Game" is the itstm sensational n d worked, but the um. The Game, is i "DRAGON ATTACK" is the most senseless, irritating song on the album's first side. The beat is monotonous, created with only a drum, and Mercury sounds like he has a one-note repertoire. i The song simply has no melody and the drumbeat is interspersed with what are supposed to be driving guitar solos. Unfortunately, Queen aoes 1101 piay quite up to par. "Another One Bites the Dust," the song currently receiving radio airplay, saves The Game from 'W~*CI RESTAURAfTT :Hb (3 SAIOOD olden ?p TV rsitv of S s its imat. sliding straight down hill. Rf Like "Dragon Attack," | "Another One Bites the Dust" depends on hand clapping and heavy percussion, but a catchy beat and Mercury's vocals make the song an unqualified success. i "Need Your Loving Tonight," a song about the - rr - z - ? ciiu ui an auair, is k I reminiscent of the Records' P "Starry Eyes." The song I ~ contains the best guitar work on the album, though the P , lyrics, (I must be strong so I she won't know how much I I ' miss her/I only hope as time P goes one, I'll forget her) H drag it down. p SIDE ONE closes with | "Crazy Little .Thing called I Love," Queen's salute to the I late Elvis Presley. U Side two starts out badly B with "Rock It." The first B quarter of the song drags, I , but the beat picks up to add a I little interest. "Hock It" I isn't really poor in-| strumentally, but lyrics like l un on, un on/ you reauy think they like to rock in space?" destroy it.
