'Mrs. K' keeps c Howe a hunt Rv Mirhnlln Rnrrhotta Assistant Sports Editor ] If the way to a man's heart 1 is through his stomach, then ] Mrs. Sue Kurpiewski, the Roost Cafeteria dietician, may be a part of some of the biggest hearts around. , Affectionately known as t "Mrs. K" by the athletes, employees and coaches at the Roost, Mrs. Kurpiewski tries to combine a knowledge of proper food, the athletes' schedules and her own personal touch to make meals at the Roost more than just eating food. ! As she explains it, overall ( meals are structured around < wnai an ainiete neeas, dui . the amount and type of food ^ each individual athlete eats are based on the needs of that person. j Working closely with the j team trainers, Mrs. K learns ( which players need to gain 1 or lose weight and suggests ] the proper food for them. | Some players need to be told | each day what to eat. 1 Contrary to the popular belief that football players eat more than any other 1 athletes, Mrs. K explained '< that members of the other 1 teams have big appetites as 1 well. 1 "Football players do eat a J whole lot," she said, "but < other athletes such as soccer players and swimmers eat a ? 1 i r _ . d v cnee tryouts bt USC JV cheerleader try-outs 1 plications may be obtained at the Desk, Capstone Desk, Bates We Athletics Office and the Round sophomores are eligible to try out Applications must be turned ii Linda Singer, USC Athletic D 29208. According to Mrs. K, iuring only one breakfast at he Roost they serve % quarts of orange juice, along vith the rest of the meal. During one main meal thirty iozen rolls might be consumed, with 200 Dounds of arime rib and 35 gallons of eaand punch. While feeding the athletes is important, Mrs. K feels that even more important is the personal touch involved. "I'm very careful about who [ choose to work here because they need to have .hat personal touch with the 3oys," she explained. "A lot of these boys are lere for four or five years and they eat here for three neals a day. You can't help 3ut get to know them.
