Benatar's'passion is fiery follow-up By Ronda Templeton Entertainment Editor Pat Benatar was an instant success with the release of her last album, In the Heat of the Night. One cut off that album, "Heartbreaker," catapulted her to instant airwave success. This month, Benatar released a new album, Crimes of Passion, and it is even better than her last. Through the album, she has identified herself as a consistent, creative, salable performer whose crystal-clear, bell-like voice stands out among a legion of female singers. Benatar has found success in what has traditionally been considered a man's world. Her concert image is that of a rough, raunchy woman, but her innate femininity emerges through that tough exterior. Oddly, one of the least impressive songs on the Crimes of Dooninn nlK.im <'Vn.. ID . M 1 I U f II r ciooiun aiuuiu, x uu UCUCI null, llctd UCCII L'UUdCU 1U1 I ctUlU airplay. Not that the song is bad, or even poor, it is just not one of the more exciting numbers on the record. The first song on the album, "Treat Me Right," sounds a little like Blondie's "Call Me." It is the age-old story of a lover who can't make up his mind about the validity of a relationship. The song is followed by the peppy "You Better Run." The next song, "Never Wanna Leave You," is reminiscent of the B-52's' "Rock Lobster." Benatar sounds like a panther-the listener can picture her pacing back and forth like an animal in a cage. "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" is one of the most enjoyable songs on the new release. Benatar sounds angry, even defiant, as she taunts "A real tough cookie with a long history/Of breaking little hearts like the one in me/Before I put another notch in my lipstick case/You better make sure you put me in my place." Benatar hops onto the child-beating bandwagon with the next cut, "Hell is for Children." Though the song is easy to listen to, in fact, the music is great, the lyrics seem a little trite. Several years ago, drug abuse was a popular song theme, then wife beating came into vogue as a film topic now it seems child abuse has become an overworked issue. The second side of Crimes of Passion starts with a song* reminiscent of the Knack or Fotomaker, "Little Paradise." The rhythm synthesizer and driving background beat are what lifts the song above the ordinary. "I'm Gonna Follow You" is one of the most interestingly mixed songs released in recent months. The undulating melody runs the gamut from slow to fast with Benatar's weaving voice creating the melody. The song has an eerie essence and at some points even an "occult" sound. "Wuthering Heights," a Kate Bush song, gives the album's second side some classical overtones and "Prisoner of Love" is good, though the lyrics are somewhat trite. "Prisoner of Love" has virtually no background music and the tune is carried by Benatar's finely-tuned voice. "Out-A-Touch" concludes the album with a pseudo-punk essence. The song is fast-paced with a sudden endine. leavine the listener expecting another song. Crimes of Passion would be an asset to almost anyone's record collection. Benatar is destined for more success, though it will be difficult for her to top this offering.
