Movietonews j will Dremiere in 2 years By Walter Allread Staff Writer The Movietonews films donated to USC by 20th CenturyFox will not be available to the public for about two years. Kenneth Toombs, director* of the Thomas Cooper Library, blamed the delay on cataloging time. Toombs said indexing the films, the most extensive such Droiect ever attemntpH will take about five years. Employees will be talking to major news network* within the next few months to discuss the cataloging process, which : will be handled by no more than two persons. The $40 million collection, a record corporate gift to a university when it was donated to USC last spring, is 35mm film, Toombs said. Since the university has no facilities for 35mm film, plans call for converting selected footage to 16mm film or videotape. 20th Century-Fox has been converting the original footage from flammable nitrate stock to safety stock. rnr,c3iur.i\ i jAivits B. noiaerman called the news film "the best source or pictorial review" of the period from 1919 to 1963, and he said the footage will be an invaluable academic asset. Ninety percent of the film has never been viewed by the public. ETV facilities will make the footage available to educational and commercial film producers worldwide. USC plans to charge commercial filmmakers for using the film, and Holderman said the Movietonews will eventually pay for the proposed arts center where the film will be stored. Robert Roberson, vice president of Computer Services, said Computer Services is drafting a document requesting a $2.5 million addition to a capital improvements bond bill for upgrading the computer. Rep. Bill Campbell, D-Columbia, had sought $5.5 million for improving the university's computer services, but faced a filibuster by Sen. John Drummond, D-Greenwood, shortly before the General Assembly ended its spring session. JI - - m university employee works on (JSC's overloaded Amdahl computer. Roberson said the money may be available after April 15,1981. Roberson said the state's technical colleges will now use the state General Services Division's computer, leaving USC more time on the Amdahl, which handles research, recordkeeping and instructional duties.
