Depth, By Michelle Burchette Assistant Sports Editor Returning all of their players except one from last year's squad, and adding a few new faces, the women's volleyball team will be looking for a fresh start this season. Following a disappointing 1979-80 season, the Lady Gamecocks have been working hard to rebuild and improve th<jir team. Citing inconsistency as the root of last season's difficulties. Martino spent most of her time recruiting experienced players. "My biggest recruiting nliipplivp u;nc ant a Inl ~ """ &"< ? ??? more experienced players," Martino said. "We had such a young team last year because we lost eight players the year before, so I had to bring in a lot of freshman. i 4 M experie "We played some fine matches but we were very inconsistent and that's only from inexperience. We brought in a lot of experienced players now and we have a tremendous amount of depth on the team." Last year's squad, minus Star Burdell who graduated will form the backbone of the team. With a year of both collegiate and USVB^ (United States Volleybal /v^bueici uuiu uuiiipeuiiui behind them, the Lad} Gamecocks have learnec how to work together as c team. "When we're at this level, particularly a Division 1 school, if we don't play a USVBA season we'll be way behind everybody," she said. ,lAn athlete of this caliber has to play volleyball at least nine months out ol the year, or else she wouldn't be able to play at this level." The only Lady Gamecocks o did not participate with uie Carolina squad in USVBA action this spring are the two freshman and ^ee transfers who will be new to (JSC this year. Debbie McClure, a transfer from Georgia State, will be a setter-hitter for the Gamecocks.
