Eric Carmen's a iniirnpu h^r Eric Carmen's newest record album, "Tonight You're Mine," on Arista, is more rock'n'roll than one expects from him. He says people ask if this isn't a big change of pace, and the answer is no. He always has written and sung both rock and ballads. But "All By Myself," on his first soio aiDum, "Eric Carmen," became a big ~ hit and was a ballad, so people think of him as a balladeer. Both LP and single are gold. The Raspberries, the group he formed in Cleveland in 1972, he says, "Made our first album, which consisted of some rock'n'roll ' and mid-tempo v allads. Out of it came 'Go , All the Way, a three and a half-minute rock'n'roll number. Everybody went so 1 crazy for that record. Carmen laments that having residence in both Beechwood, Ohio, and Los Angeles "totally negates any possibility of a social _ life. I bounce back and forth between the two. I'd like to be married. It gets very lonely out on the road sometimes. But I have to find myself in one place long enough to cfteate some kind of relationship." Still, he's much happier as a solo performer than he was as a Raspberry. He's mobbed in Japan, he says, like the Beatles used to be. < "The Raspberries were together two ; years for one century. It was a very sue- i cessful failure of a group.'' I i < Td like to be married. Carmen, who is 30, was born and reared in Lyndhurst, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb. His parents now live in Mayfield, another suburb. "I kind of grew up around classical music and never heard of pop until I was 16. I took violin lessons from my aunt for two years, hated it and was a dropout at 6. "There was a girl in my ninth-period art class in love with Paul McCartney and I had a crush on her. I thought I'd better form a rock band. I might get her. It was the beginning of my illustrious career in rock'n'roll. But for her, I might have been a classical musician." Carmen's second LP was "Boats Against the Current" and his third was "Change of Heart." His favorite of songs he has written is "Boats Against the Current." He says, "The album is music to hang yourself in the closet by. I had a very pessimistic view of the world at that point, it's my favorite album, actually, but I wouldn't suggest it be played in mental nstitutions." He says the title comes from the last paragraph of "The Great Gatsby," adding V>n? P U - - t-!- r -- * .uai A*. ovuu r iL^geraiu is nis lavorue iuthor or alter ego.
