Billygate saga unfair to Jimmy Thft imnnrtiinrfi of Rillv Pnrter'c Hoc with caimrol nfnmmnnt ? ? ? , ?? ?- ?- j vv. u tivu n>ui uvTVini |/iUIUlllCHV Ull/jraiia has been greatly over-rated and exaggerated by senators, the Justice Department and the media. Anyone who thinks Billy has any influence on his brother is crazy. Billy has proven to be a terrible nuisance to the president, and it is clear that his views have no impact on the president or on his decisions. Yet the media continually hypes Billy's saga as if it were a major news story. It is probably true that the Libyans paid Billy and that the money was not a loan. The Justice Department should make an investigation and press charges against Billy if they find criminal wrongdoing, but the people of America should be spared a continous bombardment of news coverage on this ridiculous story. The time has come for the media to ignore him. President Carter is being penalized by many ignorant people who blame him for his brother's irresponsible actions. It is not the president's fault that his brother is a fool. The "Dump Carter" movement has gained momentum since Billy's antics thrust him into the national spotlight. Carter should not have to suffer politically because of his brother's problems, but unfortunately many Americans are easily overcome by the media exposure and have been misled into believing that the president is somehow connected in the scandal. The Republicans are trying to use Billy's misadventures to discredit the president. If they had any sense, they would try to attack Carter on tne basis ol his own record as the president. Carter has been no presidential gem and politically it would make more sense for the Republicans to criticize him on that basis. Some people are calling the whole affair Billygate. This horrendous attempt to equate Billy's situation with the Watergate break-in is absurd. Once again, the media is leading the way by playing the story up and giving it big headlines. in a tree democracy, people should judge candidates on their meritsnot on the basis of what a candidate's family members say or do. One can only hope that this will be the case when the Democratic Convention convenes at Madison Square Garden in New York. Whether Carter is the best candidate or not, he should not in any way be hindered politically because his brother is a bumbling idiot.
