driving under the influence after a campus officer pulled him at j
Park and Pendleton streets. The man got out of the car naked and j

FRIDAY, JULY 18: A battery was discovered stolen from a
student's car after he tried to start it at the Wheat Street parking lot. i
A faculty member's camera equipment was stolen after he left it j
| on the floor in his unsecured office at the Science Annex No. 1.

| Six people were stuck on a BA Building elevator. A Westinghouse
Co. Emergency man was called to free them.
THURSDAY, JULY 17: A faculty member reported that six
! "Winnie the Pooh" stuffed bears were stolen from the Wade Hampton
Hotel. The bears were borrowed from Sears & Roebuck.
A faculty member's chained moped was stolen from the bicycle
rack at Nada Apartments.

she left it on the registration desk in the War Memorial Museum. Her
check book, $20 and credit cards were stolen.
The canteen machine in Gambrell was broken into after an investigation
revealed that the service man had left it unlocked. The
amount of milk and stolen money was undetermined.
A student's CB was stolen from his locked truck at the Coliseum
parking lot. There were no signs of forced entry.
A faculty member reported someone had broken into his car and !
taken five fishing rods, five reels and nine tackle boxes with assorted
fishing equipment. Persons had forced the right vent open while the
car was parked at the Law Center parking lot.

USC's Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine Biology
and Coastal Research has been awarded two grants
totaling $785,866 by the National Science Foundation.
The ten-year-old institute, which will host the International
Meiofauna Conference with more than 150
scientists from 17 countries July 27-Aug. 2, received a

project studying the transfer of materials between
the subsystems composing the coastal ecosystem.
THE FUNDS WILL supplement earlier grants
from the foundation that financed similar research

will allow ten investigating scientists to compile their
four years of data on subsystems transfers, then
publish their findings.
The remaining grant of $330,000 will supplement
state funds to build a second field laboratory and a
new boathouse-shop at the Baruch Institute's field
station near Georgetown at Hobcaw Barony.
More than 500 scientists and USC students used the
field laboratory in 1979 and last construction there
was in 1977. Dr. John Vernberg, director of the Institute,
said the construction is necessary if the field
