(Photo by L ynn U SC att to meet c for hand: By Walter Allread Gamecock Staff Writer USC is attempting to meet a July 1 deadline for making buildings and other structures accessible to the handicapped. The deadline was irt i nno J * *?? 1 avii in laio unuei vocational Rehabilitation Act 504. Just how the university is progressing toward meeting that deadline is unknown because Victoria Fox, head of Affirmative Action was unavailable for comment. Fox, who will report on USC's efforts to make the school accessible, is the only university official with the information. While not every building on campus has been made accessible to the handicapped the director of Services for Handicapped Students here, Brenda Cooper, says problems with structural barriers are often overcome by coordinating scheduling and space for the physically impaired student. THE UNIVERSITY-FUNDED program Cooper has directed since August 1979 counsels 47 orthooedicallv handicaDDed students in scheduling classes, finding assistants, adjusting to college life, as well as helping parents and staff members understand the needs of the handicapped. Cooper said she expects 6C students to seek her program's assistance in the fall, adding thai "USC is quickly taking its identity THE ROLLS OF PjH | WE'VE GOT THE TOP OF Th COPIER WITH ALL THE EXT BUT AT THE ECONOMICAL OUR EXTRAS INCLUDE: Spotless Legal and Letter Collation Two-Sided Copi< Cardstock Labels Your L< ! Cooper credits the state's climate and recent rennovations to campus structures as part of USC attractiveness to the handicanned - ri Elevator shafts in Barnwell College are being changed to accomodate wheelchairs, while Career Planning in Harper College is moving to make room for classrooms for the College of Social Work, in which some handicapped students are enrolled, she said. n - i * ? opeciai pnoriiy tor nousing is given to the handicapped here, Cooper said. There are 26 spaces 1 for men and 88 spaces for women, ; as well as four apartments for married couples, she said. ANTHONY RAYMOND, a 24year-old quadroplegic philosophy major, says there are still some barriers at USC "but they are small barriers -things like trash cans being in the way, or door knobs being out of reach." "Some of the biggest barriers are students themselves," he said. Finding attendants and aides can be difficult, he says, not because it's hard work, but because students don't want to become involved.
