After seven and a half weeks of swinging, cheering, throwing, chewing, and rainouts, the official 1980 Softball playoffs began last night. This also marked the beginning of the end for the 1 979-80 USC Intramural year. This year's Softball playoff qualifications had been broadened a little, as shown by the huge turnout at the playoff meeting Monday night. U IIIO VWfV VVIIIU surfing Club did all three when they headed out to Lake Murray this past weekend and competed in the South Carolina State Windsurfing Championship, sponsored by the USC Windsurfing Club and Dannon Yogurt. For those competing, as well as those who gathered to watch, the ^nampionsnip was an exciting ana interesting way to spend a beach weekend. Even though windsurfing is relatively new in South Carolina, this I State Championship drew some of the best windsurfers in the state, as well as participants from Georgia, Canada, and even Austria. To earn this ?"< prestigious win. Matt had to compete in the three competitive divisions of :Slalom, Freestyle, and Port Olympic. "** The Slalom Course, which features ***<*> two windsurfers sailing simultaneously through six floating buoys on a three-lap excursion, began the competition on Saturday. The Port Olympic competition followed the Slalom Race. The final event of the Cham pionship was the Freestyle Competition on Sunday. Each windsurfer was allowed to attempt any "tricks" r or windsurfing stunts as three judges! IP* watched. The winners of this State Cham m pionship, which was sanctioned by | Pthe International Windsurfing Class Association (IWCA), qualify to i|p? compete in the Regional Windsurfing teg Championship to be held in mid July at Clearwater Beach, Florida.
