Their enemy is the Parking and; Vehicle Registration Division,, otherwise known as the "meter maids." ! The university employs four full- ^ time parking officers and hires one extra officer for the fall and spring j ||J semesters. The officers do not,] H |B have quotas for writing tickets, according to division director flL. Danny Baker. They write anywhere from 600 to 800 tickets j per day, he said. MANY OF THE parking officers have been victims of pranks ac- \ cording to campus police lieutenant Kenneth Perreira. For example, in February USC parking patrolman Diane Seger, a veteran in the parking war, was soaked by a cup of hot coffee \ thrown out of a Woodrow dor- \ mitory window. The student was \ never caught. \ An average revenue of $157,500 is \ collected each year by the parking division for tickets and overdue fines, Baker, the director said. Baker said the reason 70,000 tickets a year are written is because of a shortage of parking spaces. There are over 12,000 registered vehicles on this campus and only about 9,000 spaces, he | i J - i auuea. There are only 1800 spaces for USC faculty and staff parking while 4300 faculty decals were issued this year. This leaves 2500 people who have permits without a place to park. THE COMPLETION of a threelevel parking garage is set for spring 1982. Baker said the garage will probably be reserved forfaculty and staff to help alleviate sictn panting pruuiems. THE DIVISION is a service for uthe benefit of the students, ac- c cording to Baker.
