?Guest Columns? Club isn't liable for SAC decision By Skot Garrick journalism junior I must congratulate the SAC bozos on a job well done. Not only hav< they raped the student body of its student media, but they have sue cessfully shuffled the blame off on an unsuspecting and innocent party. I am a member of the Frisbee Club (actually an intercollegiat< team). One would think that this new organization held up studen media at virtual gunpoint. I am also a journalism major, a formei Gamecock editor and a news reporter for WUSC. The media mean: more than a lot to me ? it is my entire life. WHEN THE FRISBEE TEAM submitted its charter reauest las semester, our main interest was that we would be guatanteed practice fields. Club sports informed us that we would also need to turn in ; budget. We drafted a modest budget of a few hundred dollars we though would cover the cost of jerseys and travel expenses. Upon submittinj this budget, we were requested to submit a much larger budget. IF CUTS HAVE tc be made, and organizations be made to suffer, wh; not reduce some of the club sports bucks? As a viable traveling in tercollegiate team, the frisbee team certainly deserves a share of funds After all, we pay activity fees just like everyone else. But the club sport attitude that clubs can be showered with abundant funds is wrong. For those students who wish to do something about this crime tha SAC has committed, why not go into student government offices and le them know your feelings? Complaints to them can accomplisl something. Threats to the Frisbee Club won't. 'New Crucible' deserves to die By Mark H. Moss arts management junior Chairman o'tho NADA Literary Society I am writing as a representative of one of this campus' literar societies on our reaction to the recent action taken by SAC in cutting th funding of the New Crucible. Our initial reaction is great. If that (the New Crucible) reoresente the best literary talents of this university, then we are better off withou it. The journalistic style in it was of the poorest taste; there were little t no outside contributions, and the basic articles of the publication wer degrading for an institution of USC's standards. TIIK BASIC 1I)KA of the old "Crucible" was to present an overa view of the literary talents here at USC, but it is interesting to note th? the publishers of the New Crucible considered only their own works f for publication. We do not consider articles on "the art of pushing drugs" worth tli effort of time, resources, and money that were spent on publishiti them. We were hoping for a small time "New Yorker," not a po( "Mother Jones." The New Crucible may have been an ego boost for some members < the journalism department, but to the rest of us it was a kick in th groin. TIIKKK WILL BK no tears shed at the death of this poor ef/ort. If the was our best (and it certainly was not) then we are better off without it. Perhaps there is still hope. Maybe SAC can use the compost heap th* was the New Crucible, and grow back the old "Crucible." Because, let be honest, a small tree is better than a heap of dung. gamecock ""opinion"" Founded 1 908 Tom Travis Editor hi Chief Brian Duncan Copy Dosk Chief / ?>t t f>r< Mark Platte News Editor ** Brott Friedlander Spo'ts Editor The ( amei-oek welcomes letters from James Rokosny Entertainment Editor readers All letters must be typewritten ? triple spaced on a 65-space line and should h Robert Ariail Graphics Editor maximum of :HX) words Janet Gibson Editorial Pago Editor Letters must be signed with the wrilt correct name, telephone, mailing addri Cytinda Calvert Wire Editor class standing and major Pseudonyms i Ronda TompUitori Assistant News Editor unacceptable, but the writer s name may withheld by request il circumstances warra Steve Riddell Assistant Sports Editor yye rt.st.rvt. the right to edit letters for sp; Jeffrey Chamey Assistant Entertainment Ed and style Address letters to Campus Opmi The Gamecock.
