I call it a conditioning procedure for life after a nervous break-down. Fire drills don't cause break-downs, of course, but thev cet vou to the point of teetering on the edge so that the next morning when your alarm goes off you're a classic basket case. I LAY THERE in my bed with my heart beating a comfortable 170 beats a minute and tried to attribute all the noise to a vivid imagination and perhaps a little too much garlic for dinner. The cold, hard fact that my roommate was streaking around the room searching for her key and left shoe (and then trying to cram the shoe in the door lock while doing her best to make that key stay on her foot) finally convinced me that someimng was aennitely happening in the real world. I hopped up with lightening speed and pulled on a pair of pumps that were obviously the j wrong shade of blue for my nightgown. As I fumbled with my ' coat my roommate threw a towel over my head to prevent smoke | inhalation.
