Quick ? what springs to mint
when you hear "Valentine's Day?"
Cupid shooting his arrow? Lover:
walking hand in hand? A single
perfect red rose? Well, Valentine':
Day means all of these things an<
more, but it began as a symbol o
only one thing ? birds!
Salaries
skyrocket
HOLLYWOOD < \P> ? As the
film industry glides into the 1980s
in an atmosphere of prosperity,
one unsettling element appears:
those million-dollar star salaries.
Ten years ago, a $1 million fee
for a star was almost unheard of
Five years ago. perhaps five ac
tors could draw such payment
Today at least a score of stars cai
-exact million-dollar salaries. Ant
the list is growing.
Steve Martin earned a reported
half-million dollars for his film

They, too, prefer to develop theii

Nobody is enjoying the current
trend more than the top agents.
"The top agencies have taken over
control of the film industry,"
crows one of hollywoods most
powerful agents. "We create the
properties and we make the deals,
and prices for in-demand stars will
go higher and higher.It's crazy."

most cases where the answer is not
known, there are a number of
theories.
There have been three different
Saint Valentines, and. each has
died a horrible death to become a
martyr. All three lived during the
age of the Roman Empire, when

for fashionable Christians to do.
Each was assigned Feb. 14 as his
feast day.
In later years, after Christianity
had been carried to Britain, the
Norman peasants confused their
word "galatin" ("g" pronounced
as a "v"), and the corresponding
Galatin Day with St. Valentine's
Day. Since "galatin" means "a
lover of women," the day's
association with lovers becomes a
little clearer.
Another theory is that Valentine's
Day is a Christianized
version of the old Roman pagan
feast of Lupercalia. During this
feast, names of young women were

subsequently assigned to be the
gallant protectors of the women
who bore the names that they
drew.

Valentine's Day seems to have
become more and more popular as
the years have gone by. The tokengiving
tradition begins with
children in elementary school
sending cards with floppy-eared
dogs who sweetly beg "be my
valentine."
Children grow up, and so do the
messages in the cards! Slowly,
candy and/or flowers begin to
