The draft is a series of compromises, Lanfranco said. "We are almost done with a pretty good document ? it's a lot better than what we have now," he said. LANFRANCO SAII) USC needs a new Academic Responsibility Code because the university does not have a long tradition of honor like the University of Virginia or the Naval Academy. This does not mean that students are not honest and the faculty is not responsible. he said, but USC has no historical honor code. The code is being developed for the small percentage of students on campus who cheat, but will also affect those who do not, he said. The student who cheats tends to lower the rest of the grades in a class, especially a course graded on a curve basis, he said. The new Student Academic Responsibility Code will affect those caught in plagiarism, copying or cheating on an exam, Lanfranco said. The fear of punishment has to be a deterrent to dishonesty, and schools like the University of Virginia put that fear into their students, he added. The draft of the Student Academic Responsibility Code is two-fold, Lanfranco said. Part one sets forth the definitions of plagiarism, lying, cheating and bribery as well as standards of intellectual honesty, he said. The second part of the code deals with procedures for administering administrative actions on those students caught in violation of the code, he added.
