The Canadian Embassy staff has smuggled several Ameriean diplomats out of Iran after harboring them in the Canadian mission since the takeover of the U.S. Embassy 12 weeks ago, a Montreal newspaper reported yesterday. The diplomats were outside the embassy when it was seized and were able to hide until this past weekend, when Canada issued them false passports and got them out of Iran, said State Department officials, who declined use of their names. They refused to say where all of the diplomats had hidden during their 12-week ordeal for feat that Iran would take reprisals against the embassies involved. Thirty-four of the world's 41 Islamic nations yesterday demanded the immediate, unconditional withdrawal of all Soviet troops from Afghanistan and suspended Afghanistan's membership in their organization. Foreign ministers of the 34 nations plus the Palestine Liberation Organization also urged boycotting the Moscow Olympics, breaking relations with Afghanistan, solidarity with the Afghan Moslem rebels, aid to Afghan refugees and helping Aignanisian s Moslem neighbors withstand any threat to their security. Seven members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference boycotted the meeting. Catholics favor divorce LONDON ? A large majority of Britain's 4.4 million Catholics favor birth control and the right to divorce, according to a Gallup Foil published yesterday. The noil in The Times of London found nercent I ? Embassy bomb kills 1 PARIS ? A bomb ripped through the ground floor of the Syrian Embassy in Paris yesterday morning, killing one person and injuring eight, three of them seriously, French police said. One of the seriously injured was a pregnant woman, the officials said. The identitv of the nerson killpd was not immediately revealed, but seven of the injured were embassy personnel and the eighth was a woman passerby. All Americans, not just athletes, may be asked to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow under a resolution widely supported in the Senate. The resolution, tying an Olympic boycott to continued presence of Soviet trooos in Afghanistan was expected to be approved by the full Senate following unanimous approval by the Foreign Relations Committee Monday. The key paragraph specifically urges "that should the International Olympic Committee fail to remove the 1980 summer Olympic Games from the Soviet Union while Soviet troops continue to occupy Afghanistan, no American team should participate in those games and no Americans should attend them in any capacity." More quakes expected j SAN FRANCISCO ? Scientists are warning that I Northern Californians can expect more earthquakes following nine sizable tremors in the last four days. "Earthquake sequences of this type are relatively common," said Dr. Robert Uhrhammer, a researcher at the University of California Seismographic Station in Berkeley. "We think the sequence will continue for several days or possibly weeks. "The others will probably be smaller and further apart in time. We have no way of telling for certain, but it is likely that the worst is over." Smoking disrupts sleep I ~ I] WASHINGTON ? If you roll out of bed and light up a I cigarette when you can't sleep, you've made a mistake. Scientists say smoking makes it harder to sleep. Researchers at Pennslyvania State University reported the first scientific evidence linking smoking and sleeping difficulties Monday. They also said they found that smokers who quit start sleeping better almost immediately. Previous studies show that nicotine from cigarettes acts as a stimulant, increasing the body's production of catecholamine chemicals which, in turn, increase blood pressure and raise heart and respiration rates. STRTE Draft may kill ERA COLUMBIA ? The Equal Rights Amendment faces certain death if President Carter includes women in his call to reinstitute draft registration, says state Rep. Norma Russell, R-Lexington. "The possibility of draft reinstatement is going to be the death knell of the Equal Rights Amendment," Rep. Russell said Sunday. Rep. Russell- is a staunch opponent of the amendment, which would outlaw discrimination based on sex. She has been in the forefront of what has so far been a successful effort to keep the measure from being ratified by the South Carolina General Assembly. Shaw's judge 'shaken' COLUMBIA ? Circuit Judge David Harwell appeared to be "visibly shaken" when he learned he would have to sentence Joseph C. Shaw, says an attorney. Gaston Fairey, an assistant public defender, said he attended a meeting in Harwell's chambers a few days before the sentencing. Shaw's attorneys informed the judge tney intended to submit a guilty plea, he said. "Are you gentlemen aware that I voted for capital punishment?" Fairey quoted Harwell as asking, referring to his vote on the issue when it came up during his term in the General Assembly. Dam debate begins FLORENCE ? The Army Corps of Engineers began presenting witnesses yesterday to backup its contention that the Richard B. Russell Dam is a worthwhile project. Among those expected to testify in federal court were Col. Tilford Creel, head of the corps' Savannah District, and Dr. Gerald Orlob, a professor of civil engineering at the University of California at Davis.
