Campus police arrived at the dormitory to investigate the threat and found nothing. Police said the threat was phoned in at approximately 11:05 p.m. The caller said a bomb would explode in the building in two hours. Ivan Stanley Pearson, a Navy deserter, was charged with first degree criminal sexual assault and assault and hattprv of a hit*h arid aggravated nature, USC Police Chief Marvin Harrelson said. THE STUDENT TOLD police that a man grabbed her near the corner of Pickens and Pendleton streets and dragged her to an outside stairwell on the Pendleton Street side of Hamilton College. She was returning to her dormitory from an on-campus party at ihe Wade Hampton Hotel around 1:20a.m. A RESIDENT of a nearby Senate Street apartment heard a girl screaming and called campus police. When Columbia and campus police arrived, they saw a man coming from the shadows with his arm around a girl. The girl saw the officers, broke from the man and ran * I I luwmu uieiu. The man apparently was trying to give the impression that he and the girl were together, Harrelson said. A Columbia policeman chased and caught the man, he said. Police said Pearson, of the 1700 block of St. Andrews Road, was a deserter from Washington, D C.
