SENIOR FLANKER Zion McKinney caught six passes for 87 yards, a
touchdown and a two point conversion. "I thought I played fairly well,
but that was probably the worst blocking game I've had. I was doing
some things on my blocking in the first half that were pretty bad,"
McKinney said.
Junior quarterback Garry Harper broke a Hall of Fame Bowl record
of twelve completions set by University of Maryland quarterback Larry
lmck in van. warper, in one or me dcsi periormances ot nis career,
completed 13 of 19 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. He also
broke the record of best completion percentage, which was also set by
Larry Dick in 1977.
On the defensive side there were several standouts. Robert Perlotte
and Scott Wade each had nine solo tackles. Ed Baxley had 15 total
tackles. Defensive tackles Steve Bernish and Chuck Allen each had 12
total tackles, while Bernish had one tackle for a 14 yard loss and Allen
had two tackles for losses and a fumble recovery.
MISSOURI linebacker Eric Berg, who was named defensive player of
the game,had nothing but praise for the Gamecocks."They came out at
the beginning and just blew us out. They were well prepared. The no
huddle thing gave us some trouble, but I think that was mostly because
of the enthusiasm they put into it. They started out like it was the last
two minutes of the game."
Berg also had praise for USC runningback George Rogers. "I've
played against Sims and a lot of other great backs, but I'Ve not seen
anyone as good a^ Rogers," Berg said. MI knew he was strong, but his
speed surprised me. He was a threat every time he touched the football.
He is a truly great back."
