Women ' By Carol Stiver Gamecock Staff Writer The Women's Studies program at USC is ''thriving," according to Paula Feldman, associate professor of English and chairman of the Women's Studies Committee. Enrollment has increased "because roles of men and women are changing and people need a new perspective. Now people are more aware of women writers and social and nsvphnlncxir?n1 issiips " she said. As more research and writing is done about women, more material is available to use in the program. "1 am deluged by publications about women," Feldman said. "In the best of all possible worlds." she said, courses (about women) would not be necessary because they would be integrated into the standard curriculum." The courses were not integrated because most of those making up the curricula at the beginning of the century were men. "Women have been in decision-making positions only a short time," she added. "The contributions of women, t i iui wiuiicvci reasuns, nave oeen left out of history, literature, psychology. The Women's Studies courses attempt to fill in the gap." Linda Maloney, the first chairman of the Women's Studies Committee and graduate student in international business, said, 'Man has been looked at as the norm ana women as a deviation. Now we're trying to see society through women's eyes." A different perspective on history is not just a feminist issue, according to Carolyn Matalene, director of freshman English, but is part of "new historical interest or social history, the history of what real people did every dav. This approach makes women's contributions more visible. Women were there and they are worthy of study. "The time has come (for increased interest in women's studies). Courses offered in the Women's Studies Program include University 111, Women in Western Culture, and University 112, Women in Society. Some topics studied are women's social, economic and political roles in contemporary society, their contributions to Western culture and a critical look at contemporary feminist movements. Students may major in Women's Studies by working for a bachelor 'of arts in interdisciplinary studies. Feldman teaches English 443, Women Writers, and there have been courses offered in history and psychology. Because University ill and 112 are not offered by any particular department, the teachers have to be released from their depart mental teacning load in order to teach women's studies or take on an additional, unpaid course load. The Women's Studies Committee 1 sponsors various programs on women. The committee invites speakers and plans to put out a directory of services useful to women in the Columbia area.
