Guest Column? Accumulative look at fall 1979 SG's accomplishments By Barbie McKie Student Government secretary This is a semester accumulative look at the fall 1979 Student Government. In August, four executive officers that each of you had influence in electing entered positions that they promised to do their best in ? with your support. Though the four executive officers and manv of the senators were fresh in this governmental area, every single one entered with a mutual genuine interest ? bettering the student body of USC through Student Government. A semester of endless hours of comparing, sharing, learning and meeting led not only to individual growth in each Student Government member, but also led to many accomplishments, sometimes overlooked by the students. IN ONE SEMESTER, the Student Government directly reached the students through: a freshman register (new at USC); a car show on Greene Street (new); a combined (for convenience) student I.D. card and fee receipt and also an added sticker for participation in elections ana spori events on ine oacK (new); united way Day (new); T-shirt sale for Homecoming (new); a student/faculty committee workshop to set priority goals and get committees acquainted (new); offered significant discounts on movie tickets (new); made city bus tickets convenient (new); issued student discount buying cards (traditional) and also Carolina Cares (traditional). The Student Government has many immeasurable accomplishments that effect students indirectly such as funding and licensing student organizations and passing pertinent bills and resolutions in the Senate. THE PURPOSE of this article is not only to inform you but also to open lines of communication. We, the students, faculty and administration, active or not, are all involved in this government that we, as students, have formed ourselves. I believe Student Government is a reflection of its student bodv. You, the students, are the energy on which we flow, you are the reason we are here, you are the destination for which we try to reach. In essence, you are the backbone. Without student backing a leader cannot be effective. Your student input is effective in this Student Government which acts as a student voice. Yes, this is a promotion of positive, constructive student involvement, not only in your specific area of choice but in the education process throughout. Involvement can lead to a better community and a truly meaningful and viable Student Government. SPEAK THROUGH your senators or come by the Student Government office on the bottom floor of Russell House. I sincerelv realize that there is a riiffprpnrp hpfwppn nnathv anH genuine lack of time and obviously the vast majority of the students at USC do not feel it is worth the investment in time and effort to become involved. Just remember that you have the opportunity to be bold and creative, and you do have a voice in the outcome of your Student Government. The problem is probably an old one that will not be solved easily or quickly. I can tolerate the occasional ticket or the long wait for a particular place; but the one thing I cannot comprehend is the total lack of respect students have for their fellow students' property, namely vehicles. Some sav the nrnhlpm in trivial anH fhat T om making "a mountain out of a mole hill," but I still do not like the idea of spending my hard-earned money buying a car, which includes paint, to have an incompetent parker scratch and dent it up. The only explanation I can think of is that the parking situation changes everyone into impatient, inconsiderate demolition drivers. I have seen people try to squeeze a car five-feet wide into a space that even a moped would have trouble getting into. The writer managed to criticize Neil Young's whol ;r in what was supposed to be an album review, He sp of the album, but where did he come up with his op ' . 'n'roll? Woolworth's? I can understand that anyone could hit a car accidentally, but when they leave after noticing the damage done is both disgusting and unexcusable. I have friends who also have experienced the same type of disrespect, which is pitiful among what is supposed to be people of higher education and culture. I am not saying everyone does this, but I know I am not the only victim of this type of vandalism.
