Swimm By WUIte T. Smith Itl Gamecock Stuff Writer The USC women's swim team has gotten off to a fast start this year. Two reasons are freshmen Jude DeSando and Shelly Cramer. DeSando competes in the 100, 200, and 400 meter individual medleys and in the 100 yard free style. She has qualified for the AIAW in-each of these events. "So far this year I have swam all the best times," DeSando said. "I started swimming when I was seven. I competed on an AAU team then and I've been going strong ever since," DeSando said. DeSando added that her mother influenced her the most in swimming. "She could see the talents in me. She pushed and made me go to practice. I'd cry, but it's a good thing she did. After the first couple of years I began to love it." DESANDO. a nativp of Rorkvillp Md., says she has adjusted very well to college life. "I feel like I'm . at home, but I just don't see my j parents," DeSando said. "I love the campus here and I get along especially well with my teammates, which makes it a lot easier." Three of DeSando's high points stick out in her mind most. "My biggest thrill was being named swimmer of the year in the Washington, D.C. area, when I was 12. My second biggest thrill was making the U.S. National team iifhan f \nac 1 A an/1 tv*ti " a..14 mjr urn u UlggCSl thrill was finishing 4th in the Jr. Olympics in the 200 meter individual medley," she said. DeSando has high praise for Coach Woodburn and his program. "He is really firm on the deck, which is what you need, but off the deck he is really understanding. When you accomplish something he lets you know he's proud. I love him to death," DeSando said. "THE PROGRAM here is really what's making me improve. We definitely work harder than any sport 1 know of. We swim two hours in the morning, we come back at night and swim three more hours. We swim 8-10 miles a day and lift weights. We do this six days a week," DeSando said. Cramer competes in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly and sometimes the 100 and 200 yard freestyle. "My best times so far this year have been a 2:04.3 in the 200 fly and a 57.6 in the 100 flv." she said "These both qualified me for the AIAW's and are best times for me which is really rare this early in the season. A native of the Virgin Islands, Cramer got into swimming sort of naturally. ,4I always liked athletics and swimming was the one I stood out in." "My parents never pressured me, in fact I quit once and when I came back is when I really got better," Cramer said. CRAMER SAID being away from home was no big problem for ner. "I've been away from home for two years, so it was not a problem adjusting to being away from family. I moved to Atlanta to follow my coach. I moved in with a family there. They lived really close to the high school I went to and it worked out well," Cramer said. Like DeSando, Cramer had high praise for Coach Woodburn. "He's ! exactly what I wanted. I like him a 1-4 n 1 1UI. Cramer would like to see the { women's team move up from 10th ' to 6th in the nation.
