Once again the Yuletide season
is upon us, bringing with it a
predictable and orderly bombardment
of Christmas-related
activities. I grimace as Snoopy sits
on his dog house in a santa suit day
after day demonstrating his ability

tongue as women's magazine after
women's magazine boasts 101 gifts
to make from a turkey carcass. I
wince as I drive under
precariously hanging red and
green Christmas bells decorating
the city streets, threatening to
drop little pieces of themselves all
over my car i 1 tifle the urge to ask
an Optimist just once the percentage
of children that actually
need help buying a tree.
Yet, year after year, I manage to
survive the biggest and most
joyous holiday known to man or
elf. I endure all the Christmas
rituals, including death by gluttony,
singing "Heart-felt Her Old
Ankles Sing" until I know the
words like the back of my hand,
and straining to see just one stray
snowflake in . degree weather on
Christmas morning. But one thing
I cannot wri.stand ? the embarrassment
of getting a present

to give in return except a fairly
transparent lie.
There I stood with a rather obviously
flushed facial region, a
mouth that was doing toe touches
and waiting for some form of

of shifting eyei; hat appeared to be
searching for an excuse in the
immediate environment. Choosing
the most over ijsed excuse of all, I
failed to convince my friend, (a

izod sweater she had given me,
was that I must have been psychic
to have known that she had just run
out of Saran wrap.
Maybe someday I will feel
secure enougn 10 merely accepi a
gift without being embarrassed if I
have nothing but a cheery "Merry
Christmas!" to offer in return.
Until that time I will continue to
say, "Oh, you really shouldn't
have" -- and mean it.
