flPHMRH W&Mm Board - 1 from page 1 Holderman also expressed concern because the Master Plan omitted two areas which he feels are important to USC and the state: the College of Engineering and the computer science program. "It seems unusual, even incredible, that anyone would omit engineering as a major facet for the development and future of USC," he said. The College of Engineering is ranked among the better schools of engineering in the nation and collaborated with the very best schools, according to Holderman. THE MASTER PLAN refers to "unnecessary duplication" between the engineering schools of T TCP <**>#! PlntYiann TTntirav*ciftr UOV/ auu va^aiiovii uiutu o?vj . "This is not a matter of competition with Clemson University, but a matter of competition with the needs of this state and competition with other states," the report stated. A major metropolitan area in a state requires engineering school in order that the state itself can nrftfit hv fhnf Hpvolnnmpnt nnrl f""* ~v '' ?r? attract industry and technological growth, according to Holderman. USC has also been omitted from the programatic development of computer science in the Master Plan, an area which is becoming increasingly more vital to society, Holderman added. The computer science program at USC attempts to provide public service to South Carolina by "oroducine oeoDle in a varietv of fields who can use and understand the computer to the best advantage of society," he said. KIOLDERMAN CRITICIZED the Master Plan for its failure to acknowledge USC as a system and a composite of two-year, and fouryear campuses and the Columbia campus. The multi-campus system adds I PUTy I. v;\* v ; depth to USC's programs in whicl there is flow and complemen among campuses, according fa Holderman. "It seems that nine campuses sucessfully serving over 35,00 students under the control of on< administration and board, deserv a clearlv defined and recognize* role within the states highe education structure," the repor said. One possible reason for th< oversight of the coordination of th< university's system is the em phasis the Master Plan places oi the three-tiered system of posl secondary education. V f ?
