Keith stt Connery By David Baker Gamvoock Film Critic r lis special enecis aren t tne oest I to ever reach the screen and its c story is somewhat implausible, but t Meteor is a disaster movie with I well-written dialogue (quite a bit of r it Russian), good production a values and a wealth of fine acting, s three attributes that usually are i nowhere to be found in films of its c genre. c Also, the picture is not teeming c with soapy sub-plots like previous d disaster movies. It tells one story v and tells it quite well. r ^ C k Sean Connery, (abov Maiden what will happi strikes. Natalie Wood, mudbath. The facial expressions he uses, combined with the intonations he gives to every line, make what probably was conceived as a caricature into a wellrounded and very likable character. The real star of the film, though, is the meteor, and most of the special effects dealing with it are oeuer man might De expected (almost a year was spent ironing out the imperfections in them). Likewise, most of the effects that take place on earth are above average. A tidal wave, caused by a i:>4? 11?A .1 apiuuer, uiai aesiroys Hong Kong, has some good moments, as does an avalanche in the Swiss Alps (the filmmakers were permitted to blow up a real alp for the scene). Another splinter's destruction of New York is less impressive, thanks to an overuse of red filters and to a reliance on stock footage ot crumbling buildings. The effects depicting what happens underneath the city (that's where Connery and company are based) when the splinter strikes are another story. According to press releases, more than a million pounds of cold mud were dumped on the actors to simulate the flooding of New York's subway system. And while it'c not aoc\r f a #-^*11 ? Directed with style and wit by Ronald Neame (who did The Poseidon Adventure and The Odessa File), Meteor provides as much fun and as many thrills as any movie in town. It shouldn't be missed. t YOUfi 5HE55252EH5255 <; I $iu L L= SINGL 1. Sail On 2. Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough 3. Rise 4. Sad Eyes 5. PopMuzik 6. My Sharone 7. Dim All the Lights 8.
