Susan Berkowitz history senior 'J;/ m Conference, not new coach the real need To the Editor: I was dismayed to read the letter in last Monday's Gamecock lauding SG Vice President Warshauer's decision not to sign the McGuire resolution. The attitude reflected in the letter exhibits a ivmi iciv,it ui uuuci sutiiuing ui urc basketball situation here at Carolina. There is one REAL question at hand: When will the board of trustees realize that, with no conference affiliation, USC's basketball program will never reattain national prominence? Even as fine a coach as Frank McGuire cannot win under the existing circumstances. Neither could John Wooden, A1 McGuire, or anyone else you care to name. And the reason McGuire can't win is that recruiting blue chip athletes to Carolina has become ^impossible. We have a beautiful coliseum and one of the best athletic programs in the country, but with no conference affiliation we are denying ourselves the I natural rivalries that pushed Carolina into national prominence in the first place. ft t The better athletes want the t exposure a conference affords t them, and will choose a school i accordingly. (There are exceptions, such as Notre Dame, > which has such a national t reputation on its own that it doesn't * need onnfprp*iA<? affiiUHMi \ a* , ? ? v. v.wv wtHIUMUVllif ?? Carolina we can't offer that. * Leaving the ACC was the biggest ! mistake we ever made, and until the board of trustees swallow their ? pride and do everything they can to 1 get us back in, the basketball program will continue to suffer, no 1 matter who the coach is. a ? The trustees are throwing their f own mistakes in McGuire's lap. What we need is the ACC, not a new d coach. e r Paula E. Neff Journalism senior
