9 Carolinianc From a critical standpoint, th< 5th Annual Seibels, Bruc< Caroliniana Watercolor Com petition is but minor challenge When any show, be it drama music or visual arts is so clearlj one or the other of those won derfully subjective extremes o: good or bad, articulation comes easy. For instance , if a show is in disputably good, the criti< becomes inspired and can write foi hours on the insight and beauty the work possesses. If the show i? blantantly bad, again, words comc easy because the reasons for th( failure blare at you like floodlights in total darkness. Unfortunately, the Seibels Bruce exhibition falls clearly int< the latter state of being, it is vir timllv hpvnnH Hicnnfn I VMM??j VKVI M1W^/UI<V, A VTUUiUII I be surprised if even The States ar critic, Martha Beaver, pans this one, (although I won't place monej on it). New York portrait painter, Raj Kinstler jurored the show, and il appears he must have done it bj phone. Of the 40 works currently or display in the Columbia Museum only 12 would remain hac Aesthetica been the judge. The problems with the majority of the work in this show are things , that should have been worked out J in freshman painting classes. For instance, few seems to have f mastered the illusion of depth or ? the ability to suggest textural surfaces; basic components of - realistic imagery, especially to : work like this that flirts with " photographic depiction. i All of these inadequacies make i one wonder what the criteria of 5 acceptance was based on. If it 5 wasn't visual, what could it be? ? More than likely, this show has been trapped in a web of its own , making. All work submitted must ) be of scenes from the Carolina's, - thus one can see the priorities may t have shifted from visual to simply t subject matter or theme. More $ than once in the show's catalogue f this statement appears, "History of subject provided by artists." Is ' this the function of artists? And t does the "historical" nature of a r work of art validate its existence, 1 even if it's a visual atrocity? If the , answer is yes to either of these 1 questions, juroring by phone t suddenly seems less absurd. 1- In all fairness, I must mention l two works that found their way into - this menagerie of m is , representation, neither of which ^^on aWards-<^^^^^ AMMMMlvSH^nttHtf*^ v~>?? -** ?-?
