Tennessee coach Mary Ellis Richardson said she considers USC the best team in region-two this year. "We've got a strong team," she said, "but at this point, USC is the team to beat." Coach Jeff Kefalos felt Tennessee might have been more prepared than USC since the Gamecocks had problems winning the big points. "We usually win the big points and that's the difference between losing and winning. A lot of big points didn't go our way, so that's why I didn't think we were as ready as they were. I thought Tennessee played well," he said. NUMBER-ONE SEED Susan Smith won her match over Peta Kelly 6-1, 6-2. Smith coupled a strong serve and many passing shots to defeat Kelly. Smith said, "I've been working on staying keen through the whole match and not slacking off and working on my concentration. I think I concentrated very well.
