Henry Winkler and tl Cheryl Ladd look appropriately chic as they announce that the t< show will include a tribute to the V past. si And of course, right off the bat, C the two banter about witty ad-lib j< repartee as they introduce the tribute, which features Jaclyn n Smith cavorting, through the tl magic of television, in the scenes of fl past shows such as Toast of the a Town. Jaclyn can't dance, so the s whole thing is rather shabby. b 8:40: The show "officially" begins. The stage sports a a baroque, almost vaudevillian set. n Weak jokes about various things t! . seem to be setting a strange stage of their own. And the appearance c of Kermit the Froc and Miss Piccv a to read the rules establishes the n mood of unreality that must exist F in this kind of show. v Somehow, one gets the feeling that Kermit and Miss Piggy will be i the best thing on stage all night. t 8:49: Ricardo Montalban comes on as a presenter and says, i "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome a to Fantasy Island." I Mariette Hartley wins best lead < actress in a drama for one episode j of The Incredible Hulk. Mariette \ Hartley, you may know, is best known for her Polaroid com- j mercials with James Garner. j Ron Leibman beats out Ed Asner for best lead actor in a drama, which is almost inconceivable. No \ \ matter how clean-cut the awards ( seem, the academy comes up with { surprises like this. The academy insists on not being coerced by j unquestionable quality. i 9:10: But then again. Lou Grant wins the best dramatic series |~7 award. i 9:13: A surprise?a live hookup | to the Oval Office. Alda is probably he most talented man in the iniustry. Lifeline, ironically, wins an award; Lifeline was cancelled last year. 10:33: Marlon Brando wins an award for his work in Roots: The Vext Generation. Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme are all right, but mainly they're safe. 11:00: The show is, of course, running long, me Daa ining aooui it is that you can see the show trying to speed itself up. Suddenly everything is deadly serious. Ed Asner comes on unintroduced and says, "One more and we get to the rubber chicken." 11:08: The rubber chicken arrives: the show is over. It has been a singularly uneventful and typical awards show. It has been the quintessence of television: mixed priorities and special, rare moments.
