"Now that people are aware we can compete nationally, we've made our giant step," she said. "Now we will move in inches towards more success. We, the coaches and the athletes, have established a good foundation." According to Parsons, USC has gone from having two sports at the outset of the women's athletic program in 1967 to having four teams in a national top twenty poll in 1979. "I think the South Carolina people, the faculty, and the students should be pleased, because in the past two seasons we've moved to having basketball ranked 15th in the country, tennis finishing seventh, swimming being ranked tenth, and softball finishing 13th." Parsons said that women's athletics has moved to the point where people are identifying individual schools and recognizing | good women's programs. "You | can be on an airplane and people ? sitting next to you will talk to you I about women's sports," she said. Thp nnivprsitv's nnliriM tnu/nrHs women's sports was aided by I government direction. "Women's athletics ha: that refreshing thing to add to th< university life," she added. STUDENT SUPPORT is still no at the level Parsons would like t see. She believes apathy is a ma jo problem with the women's sport program at USC. "I can't see wh; with 25,000 students, 5,000 canno show up to watch a game," th< coach said.
