Oil compa The U.S. Congress had better be keeDinc ud with the latest news the oil industry is up to its old tricks again. Exxon Corp., the United States' largest oil company, reported a second-quarter profit increase of 20 percent. And Standard Oil Company of Indiana, or Amoco, n or* * r i cjwi icu ct oo (Ki ccin increase iur the same period. And the list could go on. It is interesting that both firms said the increases came as a result of overseas operations, which are more profitable than Hnmocti^ rtnorofiftnc Kananon uviiivuviv u viviljj there are no price controls to contend with. Both also said they have not raised oil and gasoline prices fast enough to cover rising costs here at home. It is frightening to imagine where gasoline prices would be right now if it weren't for the checking measures price controls provide to keep the oil companies from milking the public dry. IMAGINE if you can, while you pump the ever-more precious fuel into your car: Exxon's profits were $H30 million tor tne second quarter, up from $690 million a year .ago. Exxon reported this profit even after writing off more than half of its $343 million in investments in MCATDATLSATGMATZ" PC AT - GRE - OC AT VAT - SAT NMB I. II. Miles and miles of cars lined up around the country for a chance to get to the pumps, no matter what the cost in time and money. The uu companies kiiow mis, ana apparently they are going to exploit it for everything it's worth unless they are stopped. The situation will get worse in the coming months and years if Congress fails to enact legislation to deal with the oil industry, measures such as the windfall profits tax proposed by the Carter administration. Or maybe the oil companies, with money to burn for lobbyists and who knows what else, mean more to the re-election hopes of many congressmen than the people who elected them in the first place.
