Workshop scheduled The USC Center for Nontraditional Studies and the College of General Studies will co-sponsor the 14th Annual Kindergarten Workshop July 23-26 at Carolina Coliseum. The four-day program is for anyone actively involved in the education of young children at the volunteer or professional level. It is part of the university's ob servance of the International Year of the Child. The workshops will be led by professors from the USC colleges of General Studies and Education. Harry Miller will lead the discussion on "Who Am I In The Lives of Children?" at the opening session of the workshop. Miller is a professor of core courses at the College of General Studies. "A Look at Reading Readiness Through the Eyes of Piaget," will be taught by Sandra Euster of the College of General Studies. Kevin Swick of the College of Education will lead the workshop "Home School Community Interaction," while Margaret Adams will lead, "Teacher Made Games." By Lisa Frucht Rantarnrb Staff WritHr An audit of the Campus Bookstore which has uncovered some possible violations in university regulations is the reason for the suspension of Ben Swanson, director of the store, according to Bob Stewart, director of auxiliary services at UbC. Swanson has been "relieved of his duties temporarily," Stewart said. George B. Adams, associate business director for the bookstore, resigned earlier this month, prior to the audit. The project consists of building an accurate machine that will give precise measurements of the amount of krypton, xenon and other substances in radioactive material. The process is an accurate means in determining vapor and liquid equilibrium. This process is called fluorocarbon absorption developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a division of Union Carbide in Tennessee, according to Uin^ont Won nrnnt nrnfoccnr r?f 1I1VV/1IV V Ull Ui uill, pi ViVOOVl VI chemical engineering, who is also working on the project. This machine measures the solubility of the fluorocarbon liquid in krypton, xenon and other components, he said. This process is designed to prevent pollution from the operation of reprocessing plants and also to prevent pollution from nuclear reactors. The process concerns the amount of molecules in a liquid i.i i 1 ?l I ^ i uiai can ue ausurueu in a gas anu the amount of molecules in a gas that can be absorbed in a liquid, Keuchler said. "Gaseous nuclear nasties, krypton and xenon, are absorbed out of radioactive material by freon-12 (which combines them), so that they can be recycled." The process is difficult. but with the machine the results will be reproducible and very quick to obtain, he said. "The most important part of the machine consists of an equilibrium cell, which introduces the liquid and gas of interest," Kuechler said. A pump circulates the liquid thrnnoh a enppial acniratnr at thp top of the cell. The aspirator draws the desired vapor sample through an isolation valve which can be made to send the sample to a gas chromatograph for analysis, he said. The sample from the liquid is drawn through the isolation valve by means of high pressure at the top end of the pump. The piston of the pump is moved by magnetic coupling, which enables elements to be recycled into the isolation valve. Temperature and pressure inside the system remain constant so that all conditions are the same inside the machine, Kuechler said. Computers are used to record the results when the radioactive materials are being processed, he added. The project began in June 1977, according to Van Brunt, when he proposed the idea of a krypton recovery system, to Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The project is being constructed in conjunction with Oak Ridge, he added. "The idea is to prevent gases such as iodine, krypton, xenon and tritium, which are radioactive, from entering the atmosphere. Krypton and xenon are difficult to trap because they are inert (unable to move themselves) gases," Van Rrnnt caiH Tho nrnipr t ic tn hp completed in August 1980. Palmetto Alliance is funding the project, according to Van Brunt. A $129,334 grant was given toward the project through August 1979, he said. The grant has been extended through August 1980, with an additional $64,973, according to Van Brunt. "I think the project is fantastic," Van Brunt said. "You either fight or take the technology we have today and try to make it safer for humanity, and that is the approach : I have taken. I am more efficient to i go this way than to fight something 1 in society," he added. "Other countries are reprocessing fuel, I but at the moment they are not ! recovering krypton.
