Soccer team;
USC soccer coach Mark Berson has signed four
players to grants-in-aid for the 1979-80 academic year
and four others have indicated they plan to compete

The signees are forwards David Goodchild of
Winter Park, Fla. and Tom Reilly of Bricktown, N. J.,
and defenders Mike Devine and John Tremont, both

college level for Meramec Community College in St.
Louis, while the others are incoming freshmen. They
join signee Jake Heilich, also from Meramec CC, who
enrolled at Carolina in January.
Four freshmen have indicated they plan to enroll
and compete as walk-ons for spots on the squad. They
include forward Paul Stockwell of Foxboro, Mass.,
defenders Eric Hawes of Ellicott City, Md. and John
Murphy of Burke, Va., and goalkeeper David
Whittington of Irmo.
Goodchild, 6-0, 170, played on a high school team
that won the Florida state championship in 1979 and
was runnerup in 1978. He was selected to a number of
all-star teams and was one of 30 players (along with
current Carolina player Ray Vigliotti) selected in the
United States to attend National Youth Team trials in

Reilly, 5-10,155, was coached at Bricktown High by
Woody French and helped his team to a 21-3-1 record
this year and 57-8-6 over the past three seasons. "An
exciting player with a great deal of determination,"
he scored a school career record 57 goals. His team

Devine, 5-9, 155, was coached by Glen Mehrhoff at
Lindbergh High School in St. Louis. He will be attending

"a talented defender who has tremendous potential to
