Washington Auditorium Monday night, they could not help but be aware of a commanding presence. Here was a massive, buxom woman seated behind a desk and beside a blackboard, delivering the classic American schoolhouse pronouncement ? Known to all tans of Our Gang and Miss Crabtree ? informing the audience that she was the new teacher, Miss Margarida. Things would be done, she trumpeted, "Miss Margarida's way." Hence the title for this strange and powerful play, a play consisting of the lady's efforts to' explain her "way," her view of the world, to the "class" or audience. Miss Margarida (Ann McDaniel) most assuredly is not a blond, onvvi IMlOO viauucc. /VII SI1C IICCUS is a swastika armband and heavy boots and she would pass for Helga, the she-wolf commandant of a concentration camp. Yet a Nazi is exactly what comes to mind when Miss Margarida begins to explain her "way" to her audience of eighth graders. Yet, for all her bitchiness, she possesses a saving grace in that she is preparing her eighth graders for life, that she is only concerned with their happiness. She does not allow them to speak, she explains, because in life nobody really has much to say anyway. She places all of biology in a very sober nutshell ? in everyone's life there is a beginning, a middle and an end, with an emphasis on the end. Miss Margarida even pulls out a skeleton to show each of the eighth graders what they will look like someday. In showing her "eighth grade" audience the way of all flesh, in preparing them for the heartaches to come, she wants to be their savior. Miss Margarida notes with satisfaction that nobody in the class is named Messiah, Jesus or Holy Ghost; she wants to be all of those rolled into one. Yet, for a Messiah, Miss Margarida has some peculiarly human faults, as she is wildly inconsistent, TTie gospel according to Miss Margarida hates injustice.
