Wanted: Wanted: someone to attend USC who can beat Clemson ? in any sport. The sad fact that Carolina can't beat its cross-state rival anymore was evident once again this r* 1 vr vc*\uiiu, ad IUC VJdlllCUUUK baseball team traveled upstate for a two-game series with the Tigers. They left Columbia with a 25-6 record, having won their previous seven contests. They limped home with a two-game losing streak. WHILE THE SCORES of the two losses indicated close games, they were not. Saturday, the Gamecocks could manage only a Greg Johson single in the eighth iiiiuiig agamsi uiemson s Brian Snyder. It doesn't really matter that USC's Aaron Scott pitched a five-hitter in losing a 1-0 decision. From the beginning, it was obvious that USC was not in the game. Sunday it was worse. Clemson jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning. Even though the Gamecocks caught up to the home team by the third inning, it was just a matter of time before Clemson broke the game open. The Tigers ended up winning 6-3. UNFORTUNATE for USC fans, the humiliation does not end on the baseball diamond. Clemson's basketball team, once the doormats of the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference, ACC, beat the once-proud Gamecocks twice. I SHOW T STUnFI AMD IN UNIVE UNIVER: p Student Orgas Academic F Student-Fa Health Sei Pick, up an as We are a thro CavnliHa I one Tiger Again, while the scores were < relatively close, the games really I weren't. t In football, the score wasn't evenj close. This year's crowd, which j was the largest ever to witness a v football game between the cities of i Philadelphia and Birmingham, a could have gone home after e Clemson took the opening kickoff and scored two minutes later. It \ was the third consecutive victory t . for Clemson over Carolina on the t gridiron. I c P In fact, over the past two seasons, the Tigers have won 13 of the 19 contests between the archrival schools. The only triumphs j for the Gamecocks were a 5-4 win by the tennis team (who lost to ' Clemson a year ago) and two victories by the women's basketball team. Add to this, the i ? two wins in seven games during jc the period by the baseball team, * and you have the extent of USC '! athletic successes against J Clemson. J WHY CAN'T CAROLINA beat 1 the Tigers anymore? If anyone ever comes up with the answer to { that important question, his name will likely be held in the same regard as those of Solomon Rlatt Jim Carlcn or one of the other n zealots of USC's athletic depart- 11 ment. ? All of this leads us to another ti question: what makes Clemson's C OUR INTEV *T GOVERt IMPROVIN ;rsity - j< sity comm such as: arking Committei lization Licensing Campus Court orward Planning i icuity Relations C< rvices Advisory Co plus many more!! ^plication in tl ccepting appli< ugh April 2S, 3 is YOUR Un ~:^^f iilii ii i it PwsBBisasi ImmS&m Tamer overall athletic program better han ours? The simple answer is ;wo-fold. First, the Tigers have been getting the best of the recruiting vars in all sports. It seems that >oth schools are equal in facilities ind coaching, but Clemson has an >vtr*q arlHiul Knmip a r*r* >**% * m uvivivu KA/tlUO U1C AV/V/. Vhether the conference is really hat good doesn't even matter, it is he mythical quality that it has ?ver recruits which makes it so trofitable. Second, the athletic department it Clemson is concerned with one Jiing and one thing only - - winning athletics, and not politics. THERE IS ONLY one athletic lirector, who is separate from any >ne particular sport ? USC has hree, including the head football :oach. They only have one sports nformation director while again, JSC has three. Also, Carolina has i vice president in charge of athletics to go along with many )ther influential people who have created the political situation vhich now exists. All the crying in the world will lot change the sad figures. It's not nuch of a rivalry when one team lways wins, but maybe it's only air though, because there was a ime when Clemson couldn't beat Carolina. IEST IN tMENT fO THE >IN A IITTEE!
