I Nighthau By Wayne Doleski Oamtcock Stall Writer The Nighthawks will play in the Golden Spur this Thursday night. They are a far cry from the usual Spur band and have frequently been called the best bar band on the East coast, if not the entire country. TTie Hawks' style is their own and can perhaps best be described as rock and roll blues. They are legends in East coast bars, where they specialize in working audiences into frenzied states of foot-stomping madness. The Nighhawks arrive here from wasmngton, D.C., where they have recorded Ive albums for the Adelphi la Del. They have been D.C.'s top band for at least the past five years and have so far chosen to restrict their activity to the East coast. This pattern has won the Hawks a loyal legion of fans along the Atlantic, where each ' Nighthawks appearance is eagerly J awmwa. The Nighthawks is composed ot four members, and they present music that is full of sweat and determination. They are led by lead singer Mark Wenner. who al?n plays the meanest harmonica this side of James Cotton. Jim Thackeray plays lead guitar. The list of big names the Nighthawks have been involved with is endless. When Gregg Allman decided to end his selfimposed retirement last year, he did so by playing a series of dates I with the Nighthawks. Others such as George Thorogood (of the Destroyers), Muddy Waters and soutnside Johnny have often joined the Nighthawks onstage for one of their explosive sets. It is not often USC is fortunate enough to have a band of the Nighthawks' caliber. If you're tired of discos and wonder what happened to bands that used to tear the roof off the joint, the Nighthawks are sure to please you. For this special night only, the Spur will close its doors from 7 to 8 p.m. At 8 doors will open, and the Nighthawks go on at 9. Admission is $2.
