USCbs I Perspective IPam Parsons is an ambassador for women's sports. The coach of the USC women's basketball team and director for women's athletics couldn't have come along at a better time for Carolina. I With a growing emphasis on women's athletics, and a dejmphasis on the stigma once attached with being a female athlete, Parsons is using her positions to promote what she calls 4'a sellable product." It was Parsons who arrived from Old Dominion College to develop the Lady Gamecocks into a powerful basketball team. And it was Parsons who helped make that team more accessible to the public. Parsons, along with the help of her sports information director, Linda Singer, pushed for television j^j appearances to publicize Carolina I_ ^kipartmcnts 100 Rlverbend Drive West Columbia, South 794-2948 asketbc s By Mike Hunt women's basketball. With the way the Lady Gamecocks perform on the court, Parsons should have no problem convincing the public that her "product" is indeed sellable. With a record of 5-1, including commanding wins over S.C. State and Clemson, Carolina has. displayed awesome power this season. Katrina Anderson, who should be considered for somebody's AllAmerica team by the time the year is over, has lead the Lady Gamecocks in scoring and rebounding in almost every game. Against Clemson, the 6-1 forward scored 28 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the 77-60 win. Carolina's other big player, Jean i m_ * * - waning, nas neipea dominate from the pivot. This Saturday, they play Georgia Southern in the Solomon Blatt P.E. Center at 7 p.m. The win over Clemson was another step into the national limelight for the Lady Gamecocks. Men v. Clemson Speaking of Clemson, Frank McGuire's team simply failed to hit the outside shot against the Tigers, supposedly the weakest team in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tigers, playing a collapsing zone around Cedrick Hordges, gave Carolina the 18-20 foot shot all night. Only Mike Doyle, who was 6 of 13 from the floor, was able to shoot effectively over Clemson's zone. The atness Hordges played his usual spectacular game, scoring 30 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. "The game came down to our inability to hit the open shot. If we hit our shots we would have been able to win the ball game," McGuire said. Clemson was Carolina's first real test. Today, the Gamecocks are resting in Champaign, 111., awaiting the start of tonight's 8 p.m. game with the University of Illinois. "I'm wanting to see hov good we are on the road," McGuire said. "If we Dlav out there the wnv played here, we'll get a real bath." The Gamecocks won't be able to rely on Hordges to carry them the whole season. He will score his 30, but there is just so much he can do. Clemson was giving the Gamecocks the shot and daring them to shoot. In the second half, Carolina hit only 36.7 percent of their shots from the field. McGuire needs someone to help take pressure off Hordges in the middle and someone to complement Doyle from the outside. The Gamecocks are young and somewhat untried in the early season. They have a lot of raw talent. It should cnly take a matter of time. __ : I
