(JSC to face Clemson Rogers sp By Kevin Johnson Gamecock Staff Writer George Rogers starreds in Carolina's ground oriented offense as the Gamecocks cruised past Wake Forest before a less than capacity crowd at Williams Brice Stadium, 37-14. Rogers rambled for 233 yards, including jaunts of one- and 72-yards for the first two Carolina scores. On the longer of the two, Rogers took a hand-off from quarterback Gary Harper, glanced off left guard and outraced the entire Deacon secondary for the score. ALTHOUGH MANY felt Saturday's game was Roger's most productive afternoon of the season, Togers, himself, tended to disagree. While Carolina seemed to run at will over the undermanned Deacons, the Wake offense sputtered for most of the first quarter. A tenacious Carolina defense put continuous pressure on freshman quarterback David Webber as the young signal caller could not manage to move his squad into Gamecock territory until early in the second quarter. It was in the second period that Wake Forest tallied all of their points. Later in the same period, Wake Forest added six more on combined field goals by Frank Harnisch and Steve Schonert of 21 and 51 yards, respectively. While the running of George Rogers was certainly the highlight of the Carolina win, part of the triumph of the USC rushing attack must be attributed to firedup offensive line. "Give the offensive line credit," said Rogers. "I couldn't run without the holes and they were there today. Our offensive line can blow anvonp off if get fired up." Tailback Johnnie Wright, who rushed for 98 yards, seemed to echo the feelings of his runningmate. "THE LINE did a great job today," said Wright. "They really opened things up for us." With the Clemson battle for state supremacy only a week away, the win seemed to be more of a confidence booster than anything else as the Gamecocks iiiusi travel 10 nger uountry" to tackle the newly crowned Atlantic Coast Conference Champions. "We can't have any mistakes against Clemson," added Rogers. "We'll have to give 100 percent and just play good football. We need to execute well. "A win against Clemson won't make our season," said Rogers. "It will make it better."
