Who to By Mike Boykin Gamecock Staff Writer If followers of Gamecock basketball were asked who was the leading scorer this past year, most would probably guess Mike Doyle or Golie Augustus. But the leading scorer on the USC campus was not a member of coach Prank McGuire's team. Katrina Anderson, a 6-1 frontcourt performer for coach Pam Parson's Lady Gamecocks averaged an eye-popping 22.2 points a game while leading the team to a 24-10 record. "1 was very happy with the way things went last year, especially with everybody being new," Anderson said. "We had a very good year record wise but this year we play most of the top teams. Tennessee is ranked number-one and N.C. State is number-two in the nation and we play both of them. 44 I'M EXCITED about playing teams that are ranked because that will give us a chance to show that we can play with anybody. Anderson not only led the Lady Gamecocks in scoring, she also paced the team in rebounding with 12.8 a game. The senior from Timonsville is set on improving two areas that she thinks are her weak points. "I shot 60 percent from the field last year but I'd like to improve on that this season. Also my free-throw percentage was about the same as my field goal percentage. I think with a little more concentration I can improve on that, too." ANDERSON ARRIVED on the USC campus last year after two seasons at Anderson Junior College. "I got a lot of good experience playing at Anderson," she said. "During my freshman year we went 38-2 and won the national championship," she said. Ander on was recruited by USC head football coach Jim Carlen. "I wanted to come to Carolina because at the time I was majoring in pharmacy and also because I knew that Carolina had made a commitment to improve women's athletics," Anderson remarked. "I don't know if the professional league has sufficient financial backing to make it, but . if it is still around next year I might give it a try," she said.
