Rut Stm/A MnrHi has made a new album called, o course, A Wild and Crazy Guy. H< stands there on the cover, dresse< nattily in white suit and bunn^ ears, making shark-shadows on i huge speaker as a visual aid to his repetitive version of "Mack th< Knife." On the album itself, he is brilliantly funny ? he is Stev< Martin. Reviewing his cornedv i? like reviewing the concept o honesty; a study in foregone conclusions. STEVE MARTIN is strange. No not wild-and-crazy strange, bul why-is-he-doing-this strange. Ai first glance he could pass foi anything but a comic ? a mild mannered insurance salesman perhaps. But when he steps before a microphone, he enters a world all his Own* Rannnnoioti/l i: _ ?M..u>t>iuw<iiu. xic uvea hundreds of lives: he's a quiet neighbor of John Denver in Aspen, a Czechoslovakian refugee in a "swanging bachelor pad," a hyperkinetic nightclub singer. He doesn't smoke, drink or take drugs, but he loves to "get small." The new album gives more of an msigni into tne "real" Steve Martin than his first. His confusing Concert COLUMBIA, S.C. Few comedians have masterc the individual phrase as well i t Steve Martin has. The wore "excuse me" just aren't funny i , all, but because Martin says then [ they have become the motto for i generation. Weak imitators hav jumped on the phrase that is th title of the album, but nobody ca deliver it with such carefree naiv bravado as Martin can. Steve Martin doesn't tell jokes he is jokes.
