Homecoming means different things to
different people. To some people, it means
Duucung floats for the parade and crowning
a Homecoming queen. Some see it as a great
big party. f
However, when most football teams
consider Homecoming, they think of it as an
easy game.
Carolina's Homecoming game this year
was exactly what it was supposed to be: an
easy win. They dumped Ohio by a score of
24-7.

every game of the season/' said coach Jim
Carlen. "Our next three games will be very
tough, so I really didn't pump them up for
this game."
CARLEN DID not have much praise for
Ohio after the game. "Ohio is not a good
football team, and I never said they were/'
said Carlen. "They have some good people,
but we just have better personnel," he said. ]
Ohio University first year coach Bob
Kappes was not in a good mood after the fi
game. His starting quarterback, Nigel
Turpin, had taken himself out of the game in
the third quarter because of a hand injury.

When Turpin left, the Ohio offensive unit,
which had been sputtering even while he
was at the helm nearly came to a halt.
"We saw the films of the games Carolina
played against Georgia, Georgia Tech and
Duke so we knew what to expect," said
Turpin. 'They are a high caliber team so we

OHIO CAME into the game with a 1-3
record and were 30 point underdogs. "We
knew what to expect," said Knappes, "but
we just didn't execute well." Carolina is a
fine football team. They have great running

"Their punter ancf their running backs
impressed me most/' said Knappes. "They
are a fine team that is on a caliber with the
ACC teams."
Carlen was not exactly elated with the
Gamecocks' performance. "We were flat,"
he said, "but we won, and that's the mark of
a good team. I can't remember when a
Carolina team was flat and still won 24-7."
It was a typical Homecoming game. The
girls had flowers, the band put on a big
half time show and the home team won an
easy, uninspired victory.
