Federal t might go for office By Fam Myers Gamecock Staff Writer USC has appealed to the federal government to grant it the General Services Administration, GSA, building when the present offices are moved to the Strom Thurmond "We have been requesting this building since 1968," Harold Brunton, vice president of operations, said. ' 4 PrtflC i Hon t Unlrlnnmnn i wuiuvm iiuiuciuiaii again requested the building when he took office last year. It would be a 'natural' for us because it's almost right in the middle of our campus," he said. The building, on the corner of Sumter and College Streets, now houses federal offices of health and general services. Before the university may be granted the building, several steps must be taken. Appeals have been placed with the GSA offices in Washington and Atlanta. Three months before the Strom Thurmond Building is comnletpri thp Atlanta GSA office will determine federal housing needs in Columbia. They will then decide if the building is surplus or not. If it is considered surplus the GSA will grant it to the Department of Health, Education and TTT?ur * ai a. The board expects to hear something early next year." USC has made no monetary offei for the GSA building. "We arc asking that the federal governmeni give it to us as a gift," said Georgt Curry, secretary to the USC Boarc of Trustees. "We in no way thinfc we are going to receive the building; we just hope so." The building was first con structed for public use. But its architect thought it might be sole to the university so it was com patible for other use. According to Brunton, there are a number of administration offices on College Street that are over crowded. They are the ones most likely to be assigned space in the GSA building.
