In fact, it (the deposit) didn't have any effect at all on the frequency and severity of damages to residence halls," Stewart said. THE DEPOSIT money was placed in a damage-repair account by Residential Life, and each student had an individual deposit card filed in the office. During the year, various deductions were recorded on these cards and subtracted from the original $10 deposit. Stewart said the student or students responsible for damage to USC property often could not be determined. In these cases, the repair costs were divided among all residents of a specific hall. When students were billed, the charges were only partial, and many times the amounts collected did not cover actual cost of repairs, Stewart said. This resulted in students paying for repairs which were not actually completed during their stay in the dorm. "STUDENTS WOULD come back and see a room in the same shape they left it, even though they had paid a repair fee/' Stewart said. Residential Life is currently returning last year's deposits. Students who have not received their refund checks should get them within the next month, according to Stewart. For now, there are no plans to compensate for deposit money, Stewart said. "Our plan simply didn't work. We are studying various methods of collecting for damages, but there is no definite answer," Stewart said. Chel?y Gamecock Staff Writer A resolution passed by the USC Student Senate in December 1977 hiring five persons to patrol the campus and protect students from rapes and muggings has expired, according to Garry Norris, Student Government vice president. Norris said the main reasons for the termination of the student patrol are lack of funding, disinterest and the general ineffectiveness of the program. ORGANIZATION OF the student patrol resulted after a USC student was raped in the Blossom Street Parking Garage this past fall, Norris said. "The resolution was passed last December and the program was put into effect until June 30, 1978.
